Anchorage Startup Weekend
Startup Weekend Anchorage
Startup Weekends is a 54-hour event designed to provide experiential education for creators, executors, and innovators. The weekend events are centered on action, innovation, and education. Beginning with Friday night pitches and continuing through testing, business model development, and basic prototype creation, Startup Weekend culminates in Sunday night demos to a panel of potential investors and local entrepreneurs. Participants are challenged with building functional startups during the event and are able to collaborate with like-minded individuals outside of their daily networks.

Who you’ll meet at Startup Weekend
Startup Weekends attendees’ backgrounds are roughly 50% creators (developers, coders, designers, tinkerers, artists) and 50% executors (marketing, finance, law, business strategy) or a combination of both. Roughly 80% of attendees plan on continuing to work on their startup after the weekend.

What you’ll get out of the event
  • Education: Startup Weekends are all about learning by doing, whether you’re learning a new skill or a new way of thinking. Don’t just listen to theory, build your own strategy and test it as you go.
  • Build Your Network: Startup Weekend works hard to recruit high quality, driven entrepreneurs- like you!
  • Learn New Skills: With a whole weekend dedicated to letting your creative juices flow, Startup Weekends are perfect opportunities to work on a new platform, learn a new programming language, or give marketing a try. With nothing to lose, there’s no reason not to step outside your comfort zone.
  • Learn How to Launch a Business (and Actually Do It!): Startup Weekend is the epitome of Lean Startup Methodology.
  • Mentorship: Local tech and startup leaders participate in Startup Weekends and give feedback to participants. Interact with the movers and shakers in your community.
  • Food: You will be well fed during the weekend.
Check out the video below. Get your ticket today by clicking on the "Buy Ticket" button.

Yoga for Stress Relief
Your phone is ringing, your boss wants to talk to you and your partner wants to know what's for dinner. As a small business owner stress and anxiety can be everywhere. If they're getting the best of you, you might want to hit the mat and give yoga a try.

Yoga brings together physical and mental disciplines that may help you achieve peacefulness of body and mind. This can help you relax and manage stress and anxiety.

This will be a 60-minute "Express Restore" yoga practice. Restorative yoga is simply that - restorative. It is the centering of your breath and body - aligning the physical and mental by practicing stillness or gentle movement for extended periods of time. The props assist in helping you to hold poses longer and allow muscles to completely let go.

Social Revolution Panel
Come join a panel discussion and Q&A focused on the Impact Revolution - the pursuit of social impact alongside financial goals, with some of sectors leading contributors. While the rise of social impact is not a new concept (Benjamin Franklin said, “Do well by doing good” and Henry Ford claimed, “The highest use of capital is not to make more money, but to make money do more for the betterment of life”) some of the world’s leading business professionals are calling for a higher standard. Jaime Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan, wrote “The same attributes that drive business success – innovation, ingenuity and the ability to efficiently marshal human and financial capital – also offer tremendous promise to help solve pressing societal challenges. The private sector has not only a moral obligation, but also a deeply vested interest in delivering on this potential for public good.”

Listen and learn from social investors, social ecosystem builders and a social entrepreneur about how they are breaking the model of “business as usual” and pursuing the possibilities for a new way forward!

Panelists: Amy Fredeen (CITC), John Rubini (Social Investor), Eric McCallum (Social Investor), Piper Foster Wilder (Entrepreneur), Mary Miner (Moderator)

Anchorage Chamber of Commerce Luncheon: Alaska's Innovation Pipeline
Luncheon Speaker: Ky Holland.

The Alaska startup community is growing around the state and expanding our economy with new value-added businesses and innovative solutions to our challenges. The next area of growth will come from closer connections between startups and existing businesses that can benefit from the risk-taking and innovative problem-solving methods that startups bring to market opportunities.

This session will look at how "open innovation" collaborative projects between the startup businesses and entrepreneurship programs, and the existing businesses, can help both grow.

This program is a part of Alaska Startup Week being held November 9-18 around the state. Nearly 100 events are expected, featuring startups, innovation workshops, investor development, and a lot of fun. Visit alaska.startupweek.co.

Taking the First Step: Starting a New Business in Seward
Join fellow entrepreneurs and wanna-preneurs for a panel discussion on starting a new business in Seward! The purpose of this event is to connect community members with the resources they need to bring their ideas to life. The Seward Chamber of Commerce will provide light refreshments, including treats from local food businesses.

Starting a business (or even thinking about it!) can feel overwhelming. We'll demystify the process by focusing on the questions that many new entrepreneurs have, including:

- Who can help me develop a business plan?
- How many business licenses do I need?
- Should I incorporate my business?

Hamajang owner Tony Baclaan will moderate our panel discussion, featuring several local business owners representing a variety of industries. Learn what they wish they’d known when they were just starting out! There will be plenty of time for Q&A.

Plus, meet representatives from the Seward Chamber, City of Seward, Small Business Development Center, and local companies that provide business services.

We’ll also discuss resources that are available to Seward residents, including SBDC advising, Cooperative Extension courses, our local small business management class offered by Tom Tougas and Nicole Lawrence, and more.

Existing business owners are also encouraged to attend to explore mentorship opportunities. We're better together!

This event is free and open to the public.
